Glenburn Fire Guard

On Sunday 17th May 2009 the Glenburn Fire Groups met at the fire station to enjoy a great luncheon prepared by Master Chefs. The function was organised by the Glenburn Rural Fire Brigade to thank the local Fire Guard Groups for the part they played in the February fires..

Lieutenant Ian Glascott welcomed the groups and thanked them for the part they played which without question, resulted in saving so much property in the area. It was the preparedness of these Groups and through their communication in alerting and assisting their neighbours, that reduced, to significant degree, what could have turned into an absolute disaster. Unfortunately, the scale of the fire was such that we did loose many homes, stock, fencing, feed and out buildings and our thoughts are with those less fortunate. Ian concluded that it is the Glenburn CFA intention to further expand our Groups to provide even greater coverage of our District.

The fear of not knowing what was happening was highlighted as the most important topic on most people’s minds. Our local UHF Ch11 CB network proved it was our vital link during the fires and since that time there has been a significant expansion of participants. The Channel is monitored 24/7 for any emergency as well as being used as the Glenburn Area calling channel. Don’t turn your radios off after the fire season, incidents can happen so unexpectedly.

It was a brilliant afternoon providing the 65 residents from all areas of the district to get together, share experiences and ideas and enjoy a fantastic 2 (huge) course meal.

Sincere thanks to those that made it happen on the day, Ian, Heather, Trevor, Kay, Reg, Bev, Doug, Maggie, Kathie, Shirley, Max, Mark and Norma, as well as all the others that helped which I have been remiss to mention.

Glenburn is the best place to be.
